Through the iLearn program, Genesis and Jaysel launched this project in partnership with Sicangu Co. and SDSU. During Unci Maka week, the SFIS Lakota Department sponsored our hydroponics system with additional support from the iLearn team.
Our selected High School General Education and Resource students successfully grew spinach and tomatoes—without soil! They took ownership of planting, monitoring water and nutrients, and caring for the plants, until summer school, resulting in multiple harvest.
The first harvest of spinach was donated to a family, and the second harvest was given to one of our school custodians as a token of appreciation. It was a wonderful way for students to see how their learning could positively impact others.
